Joe Taylor

Real Handful

Joe co-founded Real Handful with his wife Carly and describes himself as a foodie, family man and self-professed Startup-Geek. Joe cut his teeth in the world of food and drink with innocent drinks, before he joined Kellogg’s and subsequently Heinz working in commercial leadership roles in the UK and Europe.

Real Handful launched in early 2016 on a mission to bring the joys of Trail Mix snacking to the UK and has since seen it’s range expand to include sharing bags, Trail Bars and new kids range BUNDLZ. You can grab a Real Handful of Unruly Flavour from 2,500 stores across the UK including Tesco, Sainsburys, ASDA, Waitrose & Ocado.

When not working on Real Handful Joe can mostly be found up in Manchester being ignored and abused by his three young sons or playing 5-a-side football to a distinctly average standard.

Tanya Robertson-Lambert

The Saucy Affair Company

Tanya Robertson-Lambert

The Saucy Affair Company

In October 2015, I made the life-changing decision to leave a ten year career in the energy industry, turning my focus to my young family and personal well-being. Once I’d escaped the stress of the “Commuter Mum” daily cycle, I was able to re-evaluate what I was truly passionate about – great food, cooking but above all a healthy lifestyle for myself and my family.

I was determined to unite these passions in a way that would somehow make a difference, helping the many other parents and career-driven individuals who face the same pressures that I did. With a dollop of chef’s instinct and a dash of improvisation, I created a range of sauces made from raw ingredients that encapsulate ‘cooking from scratch in a bottle’. I wanted the sauces to make serving healthy, tasty meals almost effortless – perfect for people who, like me, love food and being healthy but lack the time to always cook from scratch. My family is my inspiration, and the highly experienced tasting panel behind the scenes.

Angus Thirlwell

Hotel Chocolat

Angus Thirlwell

Hotel Chocolat

“I count myself as one of the luckiest people around – to work every day in a business that lives by my obsessions for chocolate, true creativity and honest ingredients, and which also has a link back to my childhood in the West Indies through our cocoa estate in Saint Lucia”.

To say that Angus Thirlwell is passionate about chocolate would be an understatement because, as he willingly admits, it’s more of an obsession. Together with his business partner, Peter Harris, he founded Hotel Chocolat in 2004 with three guiding principles that remain central to the brand’s success today – authenticity, originality and ethics.

Angus religiously eats chocolate every day, tastes and approves every single recipe, and is as much at home in the development kitchen as he is in the boardroom or amongst the cocoa trees. With its Rabot Estate cocoa plantation in Saint Lucia and a boutique hotel in the grounds, a chocolate manufacturing facility in Cambridgeshire, a London cocoa cuisine restaurant, stores across the UK and three in Denmark, Hotel Chocolat occupies a unique space – being able to link all aspects of chocolate from the tree to the consumer.

Harriet Hastings

Biscuiteers Baking Company

Harriet Hastings

Biscuiteers Baking Company

Harriet Hastings founded Biscuiteers in 2007 with the aspiration to disrupt the market with a brand new way to gift and elevate life’s important milestones with unique and thoughtful iced biscuits, delivered to the recipient’s door. She had just left her job as Director of Consumer Brands at Trimedia following the birth of her fourth child and was keen to create her own e-commerce brand. She saw an opportunity in food gifting in the UK market and developed the idea of iced biscuits for their incredible flexibility in design, shelf life and postability.

10 years on, Harriet leads the Biscuiteers team with an entrepreneurial spirit. She continually challenges the business and asks the question ‘how can this be done better?’ to find innovative solutions. This creates a results driven, ambitious team. She is incredibly positive and is driven by ambitious goals, leading the Biscuiteers growth culture and pushing boundaries around what can be achieved by a small team.

Jesse Wilson

Jubel Beer

Jesse Wilson

Jubel Beer

I founded Jubel after discovering a dangerously refreshing beer tradition at a ski bar in the Alps that was too good not to share so I sunk my savings into a big brew that flew at a festival and escaped my 9-5 to pioneer a new style of beer. It took 18 months to fine-tune the beer, working with the UK’s twice-awarded Brewer of the Year to craft the perfect balance. Beer has been a strong theme in my family – my Dad was a broker for breweries, Grandad ran pubs, and Great Uncle was a Head Brewer.

During my studies at the University of Exeter, I followed the family footsteps and managed to win two innovation competitions with Heineken and AB InBev, going on to intern with them.

After graduating with a degree in Economics & Finance, I joined the Mars Chocolate Management Development programme and worked in Marketing as the Maltesers Brand Manager. Our relentless focus on beer quality at Jubel was rewarded when our Alpine beer was voted the UK’s Best Fruit Beer and Urban the UK’s Best Botanical Beer under heavy competition from many well-renowned breweries in the 2018 World Beer Awards.

Siân Holt

Fudge Kitchen Ltd

Siân Holt

Fudge Kitchen Ltd

Siân graduated from a Business studies degree in 1983 and started life as a marketing consultant within a small London firm, where she conducted market research for Jim Garrahy, an American wanting to establish his fudge company in the UK. Some years later she realised the business had never fulfilled its potential; that it required significant investment and a re-think to work. In 1995 she took the plunge, bought the business and spent five years reinventing the offer into a premium, artisan confectionery, developing the brand’s pioneering ‘retail theatre’ model, where fudge is now made traditionally in front of the customer in the seven cathedral-city-based shops, and also sold via their website and at numerous shows and events.

In 2012, following a two-year project to extend the product shelf-life, Siân launched a wholesale range to grow the business within the UK and for export – developing new products for new markets. In the last six years they have enjoyed significant growth; established a stand-alone production facility with the help of the RGF and launched over 70 trailblazing new products, beyond fudge to caramels, brittles sauces and Drinking Fudges. Selfridges, Harrods, Claridges, Hotel Chocolat and Wembley are amongst their growing customer base and they now employ around 70 people FTE.

With their commitment to the integrity and premium quality of the product, Fudge Kitchen continues to amass industry awards, including sixteen prestigious Great Taste Awards and Ambient Manufacturing Company of the Year at the Food Manufacturing Excellence Awards 2015. As a small business owner and entrepreneur, Siân has also been involved with a variety of business panels, and currently acts as one of the IoD Kent’ s ambassadors and as a Director of Produced in Kent.

Cecily Mils

Coconuts Organic

Cecily Mils

Coconuts Organic

I started my career in retail – Marks & Spencer & Oliver Bonas. Seeking greater energy, I changed my diet, eliminating all animal products. It surprised me that what I missed was ice cream! So I started making vegan coconut ice cream at home. Everyone liked it, and I realised that this had the potential to become a real business.

I launched ‘Coconuts Naturally’ in 2015. Fast-forward to today, and 2 children later, Coconuts Organic has just launched 2 new and exclusive SKUs into over 600 Tesco stores across the UK! The rest of our range can be found on Ocado, in Morrisons stores, Dubai, Cyprus and Singapore.

Monika Linton

Brindisa

Monika Linton

Brindisa

Monika Linton is the Founder of Brindisa Ltd and Co-Founder of Brindisa Kitchens. The name comes from the Spanish word, “brindis”, the act of raising your glass.

Monika founded Brindisa in 1988, to import and distribute fine Spanish food. Within a decade, Brindisa was firmly established as the source of high-quality Spanish foods amongst chefs and specialist retailers nationwide. Monika’s aim has always been to champion smaller producers from all over Spain and showcase their craft, thirty-one years later, the business sources many hundreds of Spanish products.

In 1996, Monika was fundamental in the change and regeneration of Borough Market. Brindisa was based on the edge of the market, in those days a declining wholesale fruit and veg outlet, and Monika had the idea of opening the Brindisa warehouse at weekends for selling directly to the public. In this Brindisa was soon joined by NYD and Turnips and these sales became the seed of what is now the thriving retail market.

It was always Monika’s dream to open a restaurant to showcase Brindisa’s range of foods. In 2004 she co-founded Brindisa Kitchens, opening a tapas restaurant in Borough Market. Since then she has opened a further 4 restaurants in London.

Monika’s book, “Brindisa, The True Food of Spain” is enormously informative about the food culture of Spain and is also a story-book that brings to life many of the people and places that she has encountered since 1988. It was published by Harper Collins in 2016.

Charlie Thuillier

Oppo Brothers

Charlie Thuillier

Oppo Brothers

Charlie completed an unofficial world-record in 2011 – travelling 1,000km by kite-buggy with his brother, Harry. Running out of food during the trip they lived off coconuts and wild superfoods. This sparked a revelation: natural ingredients can make indulgent food guilt-free. Returning home Charlie left his job at Diageo and founded Oppo. It took a painstaking 25 months of research, four start-up grants and just £1.05 left in the bank account before we made the impossible possible, creating the world’s healthiest dairy ice cream. Harry joined formally and Oppo ice cream launched October 2014. Now stocked in around 7000 stores across 12 countries. Notable awards include 3 x Great Taste Awards, and Guardian Start-up of the Year, and they have investors such as Andy Murray on board.

Rebekah Hall

Botanic Lab

Rebekah Hall

Botanic Lab

Since 2014, Rebekah’s strategic vision and business acumen have been the driving force behind Botanic Lab, rewriting the rulebook on stereotypical ‘health drinks’ and catapulting the business to success in a very competitive landscape.
Rebekah followed her studies in economics with a successful 10-year career as a city corporate financier. She has a tough and pragmatic approach to business, developed and fine tuned in a challenging and sometimes ruthless environment. She is a firm believer that one of the key personality traits required in a successful entrepreneur is an abundance of resilience, preferably accompanied by a sense of humour. Rebekah is a regular speaker at female focused and entrepreneurship events, providing an honest and refreshing insight into the process of launching and building a brand. Like her drinks, what you see is what you get.

As a somewhat unexpected counter to this, Rebekah is also an experienced yoga teacher, having practiced traditional ashtanga yoga for many years. She knows the health and wellbeing sector inside out, both as a consumer and also a business owner, but is unashamedly cynical about it.

Ruth Anslow

HISBE Food

Ruth Anslow

HISBE Food

I am a social entrepreneur committed to transforming out-of-date business models with new “businesses for good” built to put people and communities first.

My foremost passion is my business, HISBE Food, which I launched with my sister Amy and our friend Jack. HISBE is a new type of supermarket chain, with a social enterprise business model, designed to support a sustainable future for food and farming. Since 2010, we have developed our purpose-led and commercially-driven business from an innovative concept to a successful multi-million-pound social enterprise ready for replication.

My professional roots are in traditional business. In 1996 I completed a BSc Hons degree in International Business and embarked on a 14-year career in sales and marketing roles for global corporations Unilever and Sara Lee. From 1996 to 2010 I managed high profile customers and brands, notably Tesco, Radox, Ambi Pur and Sanex. This experience then became a strong foundation for my new career when I decided to create a brand based on my vision of how business should be.

Alongside running HISBE as an Executive Director, I help fellow change-makers to start, run and grow their own “businesses for good.” In 2018 I cofounded the Good Business Club, to coach and connect budding local entrepreneurs at all stages of their business journey. In 2019 I launched “HISBE Bootcamp,” to equip the next generation of food rebels to follow in our footsteps and launch their own change-making shops and brands.

Howard Wong

Little Moons

Howard Wong

Little Moons

It all began with a trip to Tokyo where Howard and his sister Vivien discovered mochi ice cream. They became obsessed with the delectable bite-sized balls of ice cream wrapped in a soft layer of chewy rice dough and realised that there was nothing like this in the UK.

They decided to re-invent the products with a European twist combining Japanese mochi with Italian-style gelato to create the most delicious and indulgent eating experience. After 2 years experimenting with recipes and ingredients in their parent’s‚ bakery, they knew they had created something special and left their day-jobs, took a leap of faith and founded Little Moons.

They began supplying their miniature creations to top restaurants in London where they were lucky to work with Michelin starred chefs to perfect their products and it wasn’t long before they were supplying restaurants all over Europe.
Little Moons launched in Whole Foods Market in London in 2016 and quickly became their best-selling ice cream brand. Naturally gluten free and with an average of 80 calories per mochi ball, Little Moons is revolutionizing the ice cream space by introducing a bite-sized snackable ice cream format to the category.

Little Moons now produce over 50,000 mochi ice cream balls a day, from scratch at their London HQ. Vivien leads product innovation and operations whilst Howard leads brand strategy and sales.
