Who is GS1 UK? We are part of the global organisation that sets the industry standards for businesses that make, distribute or sell goods. Our global community of more than two million businesses – 36,000 of which are here in the UK – use GS1 standards, such as the Global Trade Item Number (GTIN), to make their process more efficient and to trade with confidence. As a not-for-profit organisation, we work for our members to continually develop our standards and to create trusted data that can be used for the benefit of all industry. The GTIN Our GTINs are unique product identifiers that sit under the barcode on almost every product, or against online listings. Sometimes referred to as an EAN or UPC, the GTIN is the correct term. GTINs are authentic, trusted and traceable, enabling them to be identified and linked back to your company from wherever you trade. You will need GTINs to trade with the major retailers, marketplaces and brands, as they are increasingly mandated for all goods that they handle.
When should you join GS1 UK? If you’re a manufacturer or a brand and you’re at the stage of creating your packaging or listing your products online, then you’ll need official GTINs so you’re ready to start trading. There is only one place to get genuine GS1 GTINs and that’s directly through us, or one of our offices worldwide. We do not authorise any third parties to sell these. After becoming one of our members, you’ll be assigned your own GS1 company prefix, enabling you to generate as many GTINs as you need for all your products. This company prefix is licensed to you on an annual basis and is unique to your company – making all your GTINs unique to you too.
